Heroes: Ceolwic, Shazar'r, Rat.
The Githyanki make a deal with the Heroes: they'll let them live if they first help them retrieve the silver sword that Lashimire has stolen from them. The Heroes agree, and delve deeper into the psion's lair.
They find the sword in a subterranean cave, guarded by a band of Sauaghin. After defeating the monsters, a fight with the Githyanki begins, where the Heroes kill all but their leader, who escapes with the magical weapon.
They find her again while she confronts Lashimire himself. The Heroes defeat the Githyanki general, and subdue the master psion. He confesses to have helped Merrix during his studies to create an eldritch machine able to merge two individual souls. Lashimire himself abandoned the research due to the many failures, but apparently Merrix achieve some important results by himself.
He also offers his help to thwart Merrix's plans, if they will let him keep the silver sword: his researches have revealed that the weapon is needed to gain access to an underwater ruin of importance to the psion. He even asks them to accompany him in his quest. The Heroes decide to take some time to think about it, and return to Sharn.
Back in Sharn, Shazar'r delivers the papers he found in Lashimire's study to Merrix, who seems satisfied with this alliance. But his next revelation is unsettling; he has placed magical artefacts all around Sharn, called disjunctors, who cause the magic of Sharn manifest zone to fail temporarily. The effect is obvious: if the devices are activated, many soaring towers will fall apart.
Merrix makes sure one thing is clear to Shazar'r: if anything should happen to him, if he should fall, the City of Towers will fall with him!
